The culmination of the annual Puram festival in Thrissur, Kerala, India is a "face off" of 30 elephants representing two temples, Paramekkavu and Tiruvambadi, outside the south gate of the main temple, Vaddukanatha. <br /><br />Each of the 15 elephants is topped by three Brahmin men clutching objects symbolizing royalty: silver-handled whisks of yak hair, circular peacock feather fans, and colorful umbrellas. when each side presents a series of colorful parasols or umbrellas and hopes to be regarded as the best. Every time the umbrellas change, the crowd roars, while the musicians constantly play.
